Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame inductees for 2023 include 5 athletes, 2 contributors

Five athletes and two contributors make up the 2023 induction class for the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame.

An induction ceremony will be held at approximately 7:30 p.m. Dec. 27, prior to the final game of the day during the Josh Palmer Fund Clarion Classic at Elmira High School.

Athletes to be inducted are Thomas A. Edison's Zac Bellinger, Elmira Notre Dame's Darius Garvin, Horseheads' Hollie (Cook) Hughey, Notre Dame's Rachel Lamoreaux and Edison's Morgan (Engelbert) Marcello.

Contributors going into the Hall are WETM-TV's Andy Malnoske and Andrew Legare of the Elmira Star-Gazette.

About the Hall of Fame

Inductees were chosen by the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame committee based on nominations submitted from committee members and the public. Nomination forms for future years and a list of current Hall of Fame members are available at chemungcosportshof.com.

Athletes must be inducted into their school Hall of Fame to be considered and need to have graduated from high school for at least five years.

The Hall of Fame is located at the Arnot Mall in Horseheads.

Zac Bellinger, Edison

Bellinger was Edison's Male Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2011. He starred in baseball, football and basketball for the Spartans and was New York's Class C Player of the Year in baseball as a senior.

Bellinger's 166 career RBIs rank No. 4 all-time in New York state and his 34 career homers are tied for third on the state's all-time list.

He holds state records with four career grand slams and 60 RBIs in a season. Bellinger's 18 homers in 2011 are tied for second for one season among New York players. He batted .550 as a senior.

Bellinger won the Elmira region's Harp O'Donnell Player of the Year Award twice in baseball and was a three-time first-team IAC all-star. He went on to play collegiately at Virginia Commonwealth University and College of Saint Rose. Bellinger also starred for the Elmira Pioneers, a summer college team.

Hollie (Cook) Hughey, Horseheads

Hughey, a 2002 graduate, played four seasons of basketball and lacrosse at Horseheads.

In hoops, she helped Horseheads win back-to-back Section 4 titles in 2001 and 2002, with the Blue Raiders advancing to the Class A state final her senior season after making the semifinals the previous year. Combined record for the team over those two seasons was 43-6. Hughey finished with 1,237 points.

Hughey was the program's first first-team all-state pick as a senior after earning sixth-team honors her junior season. She averaged 22.3 points, 8.3 steals, 8.1 rebounds and 5.4 steals her senior season and earned MVP honors for the Class A final four despite Horseheads falling in the final.

In lacrosse, she was an All-Section 4 selection from 2000 to 2002 and received honorable mention All-America recognition as a midfielder her senior season.

She went on to play Division I basketball at the University at Buffalo.

Morgan (Engelbert) Marcello, Edison

The 2007 TAE grad competed in volleyball for four seasons, basketball for four seasons, softball for three and swimming for one. She was Edison's Female Athlete of the Year in 2007.

She earned team MVP honors in volleyball in 2006-2007, and basketball in 2006, along with the Southern Tier Officials Chapter Outstanding Sportsmanship Award as a senior.

Marcello earned fourth-team all-state honors in softball in 2007 and was a first-team IAC softball all-star multiple seasons. She received All-IAC volleyball honors in 2006-2007, and All-IAC basketball recognition in 2006-2007. She was part of Edison's Section 4 championship softball team in 2006 and competed in multiple sports at Keuka College.

Darius Garvin, Notre Dame

Garvin, a 2015 graduate, remains Notre Dame's career scoring leader among boys basketball players with 1,390 points. He averaged 24.9 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4.5 steals as a senior to earn first-team all-state honors in Class C and lead the Crusaders to a 15-5 record after spearheading the team's run to the Class C sectional title as a junior.

As a senior, Garvin was Elite 10 Player of the Year, Kiwanis Club Winter Male Athlete of the Year and Section 4 Player of the Year in Class C. Three times he was MVP of Notre Dame's division in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

Garvin played basketball at Division II Daemen College from 2015-16 to 2018-19, helping Daemen advance to the NCAA tournament his senior season. He finished his college career with 778 points and 226 assists.

Rachel Lamoreaux, Notre Dame

Lamoreaux, a 2012 grad, holds Notre Dame's record for goals in a season with 40 as a senior, when she scored 101 points and helped the Crusaders to the Section 4 Class C crown. She was the third player in program history to score at least 100 career goals, finishing with 112.

Lamoreaux was part of two sectional championships and was first-team all-state twice and overall all-state three times. Twice she was named an IAC MVP in soccer.

She was Kiwanis Female Fall Athlete of the Year and Notre Dame Female Athlete of the Year in 2012. Lamoreaux qualified twice for the state meet in track and contributed to a school relay record.

Lamoreaux, who was inducted earlier this year into the Section 4 Hall of Fame, played collegiately at Marywood University before transferring to SUNY Albany.

Andy Malnoske, WETM-TV

Malnoske, a 2002 graduate of Horseheads High School, is the first Emmy Award-winning journalist in Elmira television history. He is a six-time Emmy Nominee and earned the Edward R. Murrow Award for sports reporting, a first in Elmira broadcasting history. Malnoske won the Northeast Murrow three consecutive years, putting his work up for national story of the year contention.

The former Horseheads wrestling standout has made multiple appearances as an announcer for World Wrestling Entertainment, received Ithaca College's Young Alumnus of the Year in 2016 and is currently play-by-play announcer for Cornell University wrestling and women's lacrosse.

Malnoske has earned several broadcasting awards from the New York State Associated Press, Syracuse Press Club and NYS Broadcasters Association.

Andrew Legare, Star-Gazette

Legare is a 1988 graduate of Odessa-Montour High School and 1992 SUNY Brockport graduate. He has worked for the Elmira Star-Gazette, Gannett's first newspaper, since August of 1992. Legare started as a part-time sports reporter and his titles since have included full-time sports writer, assistant sports editor and sports editor.

Along with his reporting and editing duties, he has been the primary sports photographer for the publication for the last several years.

Legare has won more than 10 individual writing and team awards. His work has been recognized by the Associated Press Sports Editors, New York News Publishers Association, New York Associated Press Association and the Journalists Association of New York. Legare has received Gannett's Award of Excellence and the 18 Sports Twin Tiers Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ernie Davis nominees to be announced

The Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame will be part of the announcement of the nominees for the 2023 Ernie Davis Award, which goes to a player from a Chemung County school based on performance on the field and other criteria. Announcement will take place at noon Saturday at center court at the Arnot Mall.

The winner will be revealed during the Elmira Kiwanis Club luncheon, set for 12:10 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Clarion Inn in Elmira.
