STATE SEMIFINALS

Abbott 5, Kennard 4

Abbott got a walk-off RBI single by Connor Sullins with two out in the bottom of the seventh as the Panthers downed Kennard 5-4 on Wednesday morning in the Class 1A state semifinals at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

Abbott (22-4) will face Fayetteville (20-6) for the 1A state title at 9 a.m. on Thursday back at Dell Diamond.

The Panthers, who are making their fifth trip to the state tournament and third to the state championship game, started the seventh with a line out and ground out before rallying for the winning run.

Abbott catcher Karsyn Johnson was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second. After an intentional walk to Will Kazda, Sullins singled through the left side to knock in Johnson.

Kennard (22-13), which was making its third trip to the tournament and third in a row, took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the third and another in the fourth. Dakota Murray’s single to center with one out in the third drove in Jaden Kulms and Liam McMinn for the Tigers.

The Panthers tied it at four in the bottom of the fourth.

Hogan Warren led off with a single to right and Max Stalker followed with a double down the right-field line sending Warren to third. Brady Schulz grounded out to short to score Warren and Stalker scored on a passed ball later in the inning.

Kazda (9-2) battled through seven innings on the mound allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Kulms (8-3) took the loss giving up six hits with four walks and three Ks.

Fayetteville 4, Nazareth 0

Fayetteville pitcher Chance Konvicka tossed a three-hit shutout and second baseman Easton Jaeger went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as the Lions took care of Nazareth 4-0 in the second Class 1A semifinal on Wednesday at Dell Diamond.

Fayetteville (20-6), in its ninth appearance in the tournament, will face a familiar foe in Abbott (22-4) in the championship game on Thursday. The Lions have defeated Abbott twice in the semifinals in 1985 and 2018, but lost to the Panthers in the 2017 championship game.

Fayetteville will be making its seventh appearance in the title game with championships in 1997, 2012 and 2021.
