Check out the best take-out sandwiches Palm Beach has to offer

Meat or no meat, split roll or double-decker, naked or schmeared: Few rules govern the construction of a great sandwich. But when you're headed to Palm Beach for that take-out sandwich, you have high expectations and the island's chefs are ready to meet them.

The ingredients better be of high quality and, when possible, made in house.

Here are five of the best takeout sandwiches the town has to offer. They happen to be stars at the island’s independently owned eateries.

For the record, there isn’t a burger among them because that delight deserves its own field guide.

Amici Market's Parma Sandwich

The Parma at Amici Market: Though there are many worthy to-go sandwiches at this gourmet market and specialty-foods haven, the Parma ($13.99) is a standout. It features fresh mozzarella, arugula, lemon, olive oil and baked-that-day ciabatta bread, but the star is prosciutto di San Daniele.

The raw-cured ham is from Italy’s San Daniele del Friuli, where the aged prosciutto is a way of life. This renowned top-quality prosciutto is slightly sweet and has a melt-in-your-mouth tender quality.

Grilled chicken sandwich at Piccolo Mondo

The grilled chicken sandwich ($11) at Piccolo Mondo, 151 N. County Road: On the face of it, this sandwich might sound ho-hum, but takeout-and-delivery hotspot Piccolo Mondo is the adjacent sister to fine-fining neighbor Renato’s (one of the most revered restaurants in Palm Beach), so all of its ingredients are top notch.

The chicken breast for this ciabatta-cradled sandwich is marinated in aged balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil before it sizzles on the grill. It’s topped with lettuce, tomato and onion and served with fries.

Buccan Sandwich Shop's beef carpaccio sandwich

The beef carpaccio sandwich at Buccan Sandwich Shop, 350 S. County Road: Everything on the menu at this takeout-and-delivery magnet — from the Steak Bomb with Prime-grade New York strip to the superlative club sandwich — is an homage to the sandwich thanks to acclaimed chef Clay Conley and the shop’s daily house-made bread, condiments and more.

But where else will you find a sandwich that outdoes its popular inspiration — the beef carpaccio appetizer with paper-thin sliced raw beef garnished with olive oil, lemon juice and more — by turning it into an irresistible sandwich? The beef carpaccio sandwich ($15.75) on a baguette also features arugula, Parmesan, crispy and balsamic onions and lemon vinaigrette.

Rosemary ham-and-provolone panini at Café Delamar, 326 Peruvian Ave.: This tiny and mostly takeout-and-delivery spot at the Peruvian Avenue side of Worth Avenue’s Via DeMario features many tasty sandwiches, but this panini ($10.50) is popular for a reason: The rosemary-accented Citterio ham is remarkably flavorful and when paired with the provolone, the pressed ciabatta sandwich is gooey and delicious.

Thank Café Delmar’s solo chef, Morna Ramcharran, who works closely with hands-on husband-and-wife owners Gabriel and France Charron.

Breakfast Sandwich at Surfside Diner, 314 S. County Road: Don’t let the name of this sandwich fool you. It’s available all day long at Surfside, where stacked-high pancakes, salads, burgers and grilled cheeses with tomato soup are always in season.

Dan’s Breakfast Sandwich ($11.95) is named after owner Dan Ponton, who also owns revered Club Colette. The sandwich is layered with a fried egg, avocado, grilled-to-order tomato and American cheese on toasted rye bread.
