Chatham home of jazz musician Harry Connick Jr. for sale. Why is he selling?

Grammy Award winning jazz musician and actor Harry Connick Jr. is parting ways with his Cape Cod vacation home.

The waterfront 5,308-square-foot mansion at 23 Oyster Pond Lane in Chatham has hit the market with a listing for $12.5 million. Connick and his wife, actress and former model Jill Goodacre, bought the mansion in 2006 for $5.6 million.

Paul Grover with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Robert Paul Properties will represent the listing. He said the family no longer uses the house as much.

"I think their kids have grown up. They used it for many years when their kids were growing up and young and had summer jobs here," said Grover.

Connick is among a number of celebrities who live on Cape Cod and the Islands at least part of the time.

In Chatham, the median sales price in April for a single-family home was $1,582,500, down 22% from a year ago, according to Cape Cod and Islands Association of Realtors. There were 44 single-family homes for sale in April, the same as a year ago.

Connick: 'We just had a great time'

In 2018, Connick told the Times his family had friends in the area and went to visit them years ago, before falling in love with the Cape.

“We just had a great time and thought it might be a fun place to spend some summers. We ended up staying, and it’s not hard to find reasons to stay. It’s a beautiful part of the world, and we’ve had a lot of nice times up there,” said Connick then.

Behind hedges and down a long driveway, the 1960s-built shingle-style house sits on a 1.3-acre bluff with views of Oyster Pond and the village. The property has a swimming pool, a private dock, a boathouse and a study that Connick used to compose music.

"It's on the water but it's so close to downtown Chatham," said Grover. "You can be on the water and very private and I think that's unique: to get really private and close to downtown Chatham is unusual."

The house is being sold furnished, besides a few family pieces that will be excluded. A renovation was done to the property by PSD Architects and Builders in Harwich.
