Chapel Field struggles in field but beats Eldred for Section 9-D softball championship
NEWBURGH - Softball games are won with the most runs, not usually the most miscues.
Chapel Field won its 13th Section 9 Class D title in school history on Friday, beating Eldred 6-5 at Mount Saint Mary College. The Lions did so despite posting seven errors.
The Lions held off a seventh-inning rally by the Yellowjackets, allowing two runs but stranding the tying tally on first base. Emma Spanjer got Chloe Warming to swing at a high 0-and-2 offering for her tenth strikeout to finish the contest.
Chapel Field was the No. 2 seed and Eldred No. 1.
For Eldred, Olivia Gonzalez had three hits and scored twice and Christina Schafer had two hits, a run and RBI. Alexis Fredericks had an RBI single in the seventh inning but was caught stealing.
The Lions need just one win to reach the state Final Four. Chapel Field - with six state titles to its credit - will face the Section 4 (Binghamton area) winner at Greenlight GS Parks in Binghamton next Friday at 5 p.m.
Eldred loses only three seniors and should return eight players.
