The introduction of New Mexico's cannabis industry to El Paso has facilitated easy access to legal cannabis, and Sunland Park dispensaries consistently attract a significant share of their customers from nearby El Paso.
El Paso law enforcement, however, continues to enforce Texas marijuana laws. Both the city of El Paso and El Paso County have created programs to issue citations for people caught with low-level possession of marijuana. The citations can carry a hefty $500 fine.

What is 4/20?
4/20 Day is a celebration of the green, mind-altering substance of marijuana by users, manufacturers, advocates and those new to the cannabis community. In the past, and in places where it's currently illegal, the day is used to fight and advocate for the legalized medicinal and recreational use of the plant.
The day began in the 1970s in California to fight for the decriminalization, legalization and liberalization of marijuana, and developed alongside other major drug movements like Ann Arbor, Michigan's "Hash Bash," which began in 1972 in response to the arrest of John Sinclair for the possession of two joints. Such movements led to the decriminalization of the substance in many states throughout the 1970s. 4/20 didn't become a mainstream celebration for stoners until the 1990s.
