Will CBS Save 'Blue Bloods'?

It is very unusual when it happens but there have been instances when network bosses have been convinced to uncancel a series. That’s what fans of Blue Bloods were hoping for when they got word that the 14th season was going to be the final season and they rallied around with petitions and such to try to convince CBS to keep the series going. After all, it happened for S.W.A.T.

As of last week, Tom Selleck, who plays NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, himself was hopeful. He told Parade, “I love the show, I haven’t started any kind of countdown because I would prefer to just stay optimistic. I’ve been through this before once with Magnum. Leaving a show in success is the legacy that we need to establish for Blue Bloods because we’re still wildly successful. And people need to get that word out if it does end. Not, we were winding down and it was time to leave. That’s not the case here.”

Despite Selleck’s optimism, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach put the final nail in the coffin on Thursday, May 2 when she told reporters there was no chance of Blue Bloods being uncanceled.

“We really want to thank the cast and crew, everyone involved in the show. We absolutely will miss the family dinners. It is important to give show the sendoff it deserves,” she said.

Reisenbach credited the cancellation with the need to refresh the network’s schedule, and she said December will see the series finale air.

Before the verdict was in, Selleck also said, “Even if the show ended, we have something to celebrate here. It’s so rare, as I think you know, for the actors to all like each other and work together so well. You can’t put that in a bottle, and it doesn’t happen very often. We’re all aware of that.”

Those actors include Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan, Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan Boyle, Will Estes as Jamie Reagan, Vanessa Ray as Eddie Janko, Marisa Ramirez as Maria Baez, and Len Cariou as Henry Reagan

Blue Bloods premiered on CBS on Sept. 24, 2010, and has been a staple on Friday nights at 10 p.m. ever since, dominating the timeslot.
