CBS Has Blockbuster Trade Suggestion For The Packers

The Green Bay Packers have built a nice group of wide receivers, around superstar Davante Adams. Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling have developed into really nice secondary pieces, and veteran Randall Cobb, brought back this year at the urging of Aaron Rodgers, is still a productive slot player.

CBS Sports thinks the team can still make a big splash at the position, in order to maximize their chances at another Super Bowl with Rodgers. Ahead of next week’s trade deadline, writer Patrik Walker proposes a trade for Cleveland Browns receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham was one of the most exciting players in football when he came up with the New York Giants. He hasn’t been able to put it all together as a Brown, though, even as the team has found some serious success in the last few years.

After a 1,035 yard, four-touchdown season in 2019, his first with the team, Beckham was limited to seven games last year. He caught 23 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns. This year, he’s played in five games, catching just 16 passes for 226 yards without a score.

Beckham Jr. may need a change of scenery, and playing opposite Davante Adams (once he returns from the COVID-19/Reserve list, of course) would probably open up all kinds of opportunities for him. The Browns continue to say all the right things about getting Beckham the ball, but this year he hasn’t broken 80 receiving yards in any game.

From CBS:

Is this the swan song for Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay? Given the way he’s played following a very poor regular season opener, it’s becoming more and more difficult to fathom the Packers letting him go, but if this is the final dance, the goal has to be to go out with a bang. Davante Adams is arguably the best WR in the NFL, but adding Beckham opposite him would level up the Packers offense going forward — even if OBJ isn’t what he was in his time with the Giants. The obvious problem here is salary, but there’s always magic that can be worked there as Rodgers tries to finally get back to the Super Bowl.

The Packers only have about $5.2 million in salary cap space, per Over The Cap, while Beckham is due nearly $14 million this year. It’d probably be a very tight fit, though NFL teams are generally able to figure these things out if they really want a player. The Packers are rarely this aggressive, though.

CBS isn’t alone in this idea, either. 10 days ago, Stephen A. Smith had the same suggestion on First Take.

“I promise y’all, if Odell Beckham Jr. winds up on the Green Bay Packers, the Green Bay Packers are going to the Super Bowl,” he said.
