Cause of Doubletapp Fire released by Ada County Sheriff’s Office. What we know

The widespread grass and brush fire that ignited Monday off of Interstate 84 southeast of Boise began after a man’s trailer caught on fire, according to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.

The Doubletapp Fire, which was contained by 8 p.m. Monday, grew to more than 700 acres. Patrick Orr, the spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, told the Idaho Statesman by email Thursday that the man whose trailer sparked the fire had not been charged with a crime as of Thursday.

Boise’s Bureau of Land Management previously told the Statesman that the fire was human-caused.

“Hot and dry conditions resulted in rapid-fire spread, but fire crews were able to make excellent progress in fire suppression efforts,” the bureau said in a news release. The fire was located between Boise and Mountain Home, just off the freeway and close to Simco Road.

According to a Facebook post from the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, the fire started nearby East Double Tapp Lane, which is a road that’s less than a half-mile long and comes to an end at a shooting range: Double Tapp Range.

The fire didn’t impact the shooting range, Chad Cline, a fire information personnel with Boise’s Bureau of Land Management, told the Statesman by email Thursday. No civilians or firefighters were injured, Cline said.

A total of four overhead trucks, four fire engines, one fire dozer, one water tender and three heavy air tankers were sent out. The bureau was also assisted by the Boise Fire Department, Orchard Fire and Mountain Home Rural Fire Protection Association.

The fire shut down I-84 for “a few hours to allow fire crews to move around to battle the blaze,” the Facebook post said. The interstate was reopened by 7 p.m. Cline said the smoke caused visibility issues for drivers.

Boise’s Bureau of Land Management district also responded on Monday to two fires near Bonneville Point, a monument point in Ada County where people frequently hike, bike and visit.

Cline advised the community to avoid shooting firearms on hot, dry and windy days, avoid parking on tall dry grass, check vehicle chains and tires, and never leave a campfire unattended.
