It's been 21 years since Lizzie McGuire's dreams came true.

The Lizzie McGuireMovie came out on May 2, 2003, bringing Hilary Duff's beloved Disney character to the big screen in a 90-minute rom-com that made $55 million at the box office. The movie followed Duff's McGuire as she set out for Rome with friends — only to be mistaken for a pop star and have adventures along the way.

"Girls are just trying to find out who they are at this stage, and that's totally what Lizzie is about," Duff told PEOPLE of the character's popularity in 2002.

PEOPLE's review called the movie "a laudable Lizzie," saying, "Young fans of the TV show will relish Lizzie because the innocuously likable Duff is in every scene, modeling wacky outfits and singing."

Here, go back to 2003 with Duff and her castmates to see where the stars of The Lizzie McGuire Movie are now.

Hilary Duff was relatively new on the scene when she landed the role of Lizzie McGuire on the TV series in 2001, further watching her star rise with the release of the 2003 film, in which she played both Lizzie and Italian pop star Isabella (her sister Haylie lent her vocals for the parts).

"It's so, like, unreal to me," Duff told PEOPLE of her fame in 2003, "'cause I'm really a normal kid."

She quickly moved on to movies including Agent Cody Banks, Cheaper by the Dozen and A Cinderella Story before pivoting to pop stardom with hits like "So Yesterday" and "Come Clean" (she contributed to TheLizzie McGuire Movie soundtrack, too). More recently, she's returned to TV on the popular series Younger and How I Met Your Father.

Duff, now 36, has two daughters with husband Matthew Koma and one son with ex Mike Comrie. She is expecting her fourth child — her third with Koma — any day.

“It’s that one person that you’re like, ‘Was he the one? Is it ever going to be?' ” she shared. “You’re always kind of wondering. We wanted it to hurt everyone a little bit, and it’ll continue to hurt.”
