Carson Wentz Is Trending After Commanders’ Latest Draft Pick
Carson Wentz isn’t the Washington Commanders’ only quarterback addition this offseason.
With the first pick in the fifth round (144th overall) on Saturday, the Washington organization selected North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell.
Many projected Howell as a second-round, maybe even late-first-round selection in this year’s draft. So to pick him up in the fifth round is a solid value pick for the Commanders franchise.
With that said, this pick also could come with some extra baggage. How does Carson Wentz feel about this quarterback acquisition?
The Commanders’ QB1 is trending after Howell’s selection.
The Commanders select Sam Howell.
Can he compete with Carson Wentz for the starting job? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/HoQu6idliJ

I just really hope Washington alerted Carson Wentz before drafting a quarterback with the first pick of Round 5.

5th round for Sam Howell made too much sense to pass up. If Carson Wentz is mad about a 5th round QB, then Carson Wentz isnt the answer anyway

As we saw with the #Eagles, Carson Wentz can certainly handle when his team drafts a QB after the 1st round.
No panic at all. https://t.co/3kNcFCaCa1

According to reports from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Howell was not drafted as competition for Wentz at the starting position. Instead, the Commanders want someone to push Taylor Heinicke and compete for the backup job.
“It was never about taking a new starter, or even someone to compete with Carson Wentz. They love Carson Wentz. They have really high expectations for him,” Rapoport explained. “This seems to be more about Taylor Heinicke having someone come in and push him, maybe eventually take over as the backup.”
From our NFL Draft coverage: The Washington #Commanders were never going to draft someone to compete with QB Carson Wentz, but they may have selected his backup in Sam Howell. pic.twitter.com/DyVrIjl9wn

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how the Commanders’ quarterback situation plays out over the course of the 2022 season.
