Carolyn Stich illustrated book will raise money for Bethany Christian Services

HOLLAND — This past Saturday, local resident and author Rich Gritter, local artist Carolyn Stich and town crier Art Tolsma joined forces to promote a new children’s book, "The Pirate’s Pajamas."

The book was authored by Gritter and illustrated by Stich, with additional support from Sandy Brice, to raise money for expanded counseling at Bethany Christian Services for children experiencing mental health challenges.

“The youth of our community, like kids across the country, are being impacted by high rates of anxiety, depression and even suicidal thoughts,” said Gritter, who's worked for Bethany for over 20 years. “These are our kids. I’m grateful for the many sponsors and partners who have invested their resources in making a difference for the kids of our local communities.”

The book is about a pirate who discovers a beautiful fabric among his treasures. He dons the apparel, completely unaware he’s actually wearing pajamas covered with red hearts.

The characters visit a local store (Tip Toes) and continue down Eighth Street past local businesses who helped sponsor the project.

Stich was approached by Gritter about a year ago. She spent several months on the project.

The book is dedicated to local friends of Bethany, Phil and Nancy Miller, who also make an appearance in the book. The picture is a nod to Nancy and her passion for literacy projects for children.
