Carol Burnett appointed temporary guardian of teen grandson, amid daughter’s substance abuse issues

Carol Burnett has been granted temporary custody of her 14-year-old grandson as the boy’s mother, singer Erin Hamilton, struggles with substance abuse.

On Tuesday, a Los Angeles Superior Court granted the 87-year-old actress and her husband, Brian Miller, custody of grandson Dylan West until Jan. 8, according to The Associated Press.

Last month, the iconic television and stage star filed for legal guardianship of the boy, claiming that his mother — the daughter of Burnett with the late television producer Joe Hamilton — was struggling with “addiction issues.”

“Guardianship will be for oversight purposes concerning his health, education and welfare and not intended to deny him nor the parents proper visitation with one another,” Burnett said in a statement at the time.

“We look forward to recovery being the next stepping stone towards normalization and ask for privacy at this time to allow that process to occur,” she added.

According to the ruling, Burnett and Miller can change Dylan’s home and school at least until a hearing in January.

“Throughout her adult life, and since Dylan’s birth, Erin has suffered from severe substance abuse and addiction issues,” Burnett claimed in the filings, obtained by People. “In the past 19 years, Erin has been in and out of rehabilitation centers and has been institutionalized a total of eight times for a minimum of 30 days each time.”

“Carol is Dylan’s maternal grandmother and Brian is Carol’s husband of nearly 20 years,” the document stated. “Although Brian is not Dylan’s biological grandfather, he has known Dylan for Dylan’s entire life and loves him like his grandson.”

According to the filings, the boy’s father, Hamilton’s ex-husband Tony West, has recently checked into a rehabilitation facility, and is unable to care for him.
