The Los Angeles Lakers made a number of big splashes this offseason, including the acquisition of future Hall of Famer and long time LeBron James friend Carmelo Anthony. Adding the former Knick and Trail Blazer was one of the moves that drove up the average age of the current roster to just under 32 years old.

Anthony, Trevor Ariza, Kent Bazemore, Wayne Ellington, Dwight Howard, DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews, Russell Westbrook, and Rajon Rondo are all offseason additions at least 32 years of age. Throw in 36-year old LeBron James, and the vast majority of the team’s impact players are on the back end of their careers.

Melo is currently on a media tour promoting his upcoming memoir Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised. Plenty of questions about his new team, as well as their advanced roster age, have come along with it. On Tuesday, he admitted to Stephen A. Smith that “we old as hell,” but added that “we have the most knowledge on this one team than the whole NBA has.” He says the team has no excuse if it can’t “put that together.”

During a Q&A with EBONY, he used a pretty incredible simile to drive home what he thinks this experienced Lakers roster can put together. He compared the team to a “900 year old grandmother” in the kitchen of an Italian restaurant.

From the interview with A. Sherrod Blakely, who asked him about the criticisms of his team’s collective age:

“We knew that. We expected people to say those things; they have to. They have to start a debate, get engagement from people; that’s what it is. This is the only industry where you can be too old. After you reach a certain age, it’s like you’re supposed to lose everything. After 32 years old, it’s a wrap. Like, no. We’re getting older, we’re getting wiser. We know how to move differently, we know how to think differently. We know how to pick our spots and we know what we need to do when we need to do it and how we need to do it. It’s like .. you go to an Italian restaurant, you got the grandmother in there who’s 900 years old cooking the food. The food comes out amazing, though. You’re not gonna say she’s too old to be cooking. You’re gonna taste and enjoy that food. It’s the same situation with us. We’re the cooks in the kitchen. When you taste the food, you’re gonna love the food. That’s how I look at it.”

If the Los Angeles Lakers win their second title in three years with this very experienced roster, we should see plenty of this Carmelo Anthony quote next spring. It’s a great one.
