Carlos Sainz Wins Netflix Cup and Drops the TrophyFormula 1

Carlos Sainz and his partner Justin Thomas defeated Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Tony Finau in the final round of the Netflix Cup golf tournament. However, Sainz dropped the trophy from the podium causing it to crash to the ground and break in two pieces.

The Netflix Cup featured athletes from the popular Formula 1: Drive to Survive and golf series Full Swing. Each team consisted of one Formula 1 driver and one pro golfer. There were four teams vying for the win. The game was a scramble format with each player hitting a tee shot and then selecting the best ball to play from there.

Sainz and Thomas took out Lando Norris and his partner Rickie Fowler in the first round. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Tony Finau beat Williams’ Alex Albon and Max Homa to set up a final between Sainz and Thomas and Gasly and Finau. The outcome was decided in a closest-to-the-pin challenge playoff hole.

Of course, the event mixed in a bit of driving action as well. The golfers would race their golf carts to the fairway and the greens. It was all a bit silly, but entertaining, and that was the whole point. The event marked the first time that Netflix aired a live sports event. If you can call a bunch of Formula 1 drivers messing around on a golf course a sport.

The event was capped off with the award ceremony where Thomas and Sainz took the top prize and celebrated on the podium. The Ferrari Formula 1 team has struggled this year and Sainz has only made it to the podium three times. Clearly, he is a bit rusty with celebrations as he fumbled the Netflix Cup trophy when he attempted to drink from it.

In fairness to Sainz, Formula 1 drivers have had their issues with trophies recently. Back in July, Lando Norris broke Max Verstappen’s $45,000 Hungarian Grand Prix trophy during the podium celebration. The Netflix Cup trophy should be much less expensive to replace.
