E. coli O157:H7 can cause serious illness

E. coli O157:H7 can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps within 2-8 days of exposure. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This complication is especially serious for young children and older adults.

Consumers urged not to consume recalled products

FSIS advises consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers for the recalled ground beef. Do not consume the recalled products. Throw them away or return them to the store where you purchased them.

Safe food handling practices recommended

FSIS recommends safe handling practices for all raw meat products. Cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160°F to ensure harmful bacteria are destroyed. Use a food thermometer to verify the temperature.
