Career scoring records and perfect wrestlers: Vote for Journal Star high school athlete of the week

After plenty of solid winter sports performers over the last week, here are the Journal Star high school athlete of the week nominees for Jan. 22-26.

Luke Rewerts, Stark County boys basketball

Rewerts added his name to the Stark County record book last week. In Saturday's Lincoln Trail Conference Tournament opener, the senior scored 17 points in beating Monmouth United, 58-46. That scoring total, which included two 3-pointers and a 9-of-10 effort from the free-throw line, helped Rewerts hit 1,000 points in his career.

Cole Dubois, East Peoria boys basketball

Dubois turned in an early career-high effort as part of three road games last week. He scored his career-best 28 points with four rebounds in last Tuesday's 66-50 win over Canton. The freshman then put up 23 points as EP lost to Illinois Valley Central, 64-57, on Wednesday. His week was wrapped up with 12 points in beating Dunlap, 43-39 on Friday.

Allison Wheeler, Canton girls basketball

Wheeler eclipsed a milestone this past Saturday. The junior scored 20 points, including her 1,000th career point, as Canton beat Dunlap, 59-43. She added nine rebounds as Wheeler reached her total with a first-quarter bucket. Her week began with an 11-point output in a 46-37 loss to Metamora.

Becca McDougall, Washington girls basketball

McDougall stuffed the stat sheet in two Mid-Illini Conference wins last week. Her 12-point, 8-rebound and 5-assist game helped Washington beat East Peoria, 72-31, on Saturday. The sophomore's week started last Wednesday with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds in beating Limestone, 66-50. The Mid-Illini leaders are riding an eight-game win streak, posting an 18-4 overall record and 10-0 league mark.

Hunter Robbins, Illini Bluffs boys wrestling

Robbins maintained his unbeaten season by taking home the 113-pound championship at the Quincy Notre Dame Tournament on Saturday. The senior improved to 41-0 with a pin over Jacksonville freshman Steven Easley in only 36 seconds. Robbins advanced to the final with an 18-second pin the semifinals after getting a quarterfinal fall in just a minute.

Kaila Williams, Richwoods girls wrestling

Williams rolled through Mt. Zion Regional, capturing the 140-pound weight class on Saturday. The senior, who improved her record to 20-1, won her title bout with a fall over Fithian Oakwood sophomore Taylor Owens in 5:05. Williams was one of a state-best 13 Knight sectional qualifiers heading home to the Richwoods sectional meet on Feb. 9-10.

Riley Stevenson, Galesburg boys swimming and diving

Stevenson was a four-event winner for the host Silver Streaks in a nonconference dual meet with Normal Community. The senior won a pair of individual events in the 50-yard freestyle (21.91 seconds) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.42 seconds). He also teamed with Travis Henry, Carson Olson and Luke Thomas to claim the 200-yard medley relay in 1:38.91. Stevenson then won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:30.34) with Nathan Nelson, Thomas and Olson. Galesburg beat Normal Community, 100-42.

Adam Culp, Metamora boys swimming and diving

Culp was a four-event winner for the Redbirds in a dual meet with Olympia last Tuesday. The junior captured a pair of individual events in the 200 IM as well as the 100 breast. He then teamed with Drew Buss, AJ Stone and Ethan Stone on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays. Metamora beat Oly, 83-27.
