Career milestones and win streaks: Vote for Journal Star high school athlete of the week

After plenty of solid winter sports performers over the last week, here are the Journal Star high school athlete of the week nominees for Jan. 8-13.

Grant Williams, Tremont boys basketball

Williams picked a career milestone in a trio of games last week. The senior forward ended his week by scoring his 1,000th career point in Saturday's 68-39 first-round win over Le Roy at the Heart of Illinois/McLean County Tournament. He averaged 18 points and 5 rebounds in those three games.

Matthew Juergens, Pekin boys basketball

Juergens also achieved a career milestone for the Dragons last week. The senior scored his 1,000th career point as part of a 13-point effort during Pekin's 52-48 win over East Peoria on Friday. He entered the game needing six points, then hit the magic number in the third quarter when he completed an old-fashioned three-point play.

Mya Edwards, Eureka girls basketball

Edwards helped extend Eureka's win streak to 10 in a row with two victories last week. The freshman guard began her week last Tuesday by scoring 22 points in beating Le Roy, 53-37. Her week ended on Thursday helping the Hornets to a 64-59 overtime victory against Downs Tri-Valley. She averaged 15 points a game in those two wins.

Julia Sollberger, Dunlap girls basketball

Sollberger came up big in two Mid-Illini Conference games last week. The senior guard, who is headed to Northern Illinois, missed her career-high by one point with a 30-point output in last Wednesday's 55-51 victory against Metamora. She followed that on Saturday by scoring a game-high 16 points during a 54-20 win against Pekin.

Dominic Ricconi, El Paso-Gridley boys wrestling

Ricconi completed a 4-0 week as the Titans competed against three Heart of Illinois Conference foes — Eureka, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley and Le Roy — and then took on Pontiac. His 175-pound victories came by way of three decisions and a pin. His lone fall came in 1:07 against Jamil Romero of Pontiac last Tuesday.

Paytyn Dykes, Metamora girls wrestling

Dykes picked up an individual championship at Saturday's Marty Williams Invitational hosted by Mahomet-Seymour. Her path to the 155-pound title included three pins including a 38-second fall in the the title bout. In that match final, Dykes picked up the win by pinning Elsie Dozier of Chatham Glenwood.

Luke Thomas, Galesburg boys swimming and diving

Thomas was a three-event winner in Thursday's dual meet with Western Big Six Conference foe East Moline United Township. The senior claimed a pair of individual victories in the 50-yard freestyle (23.25 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (1:01.53). He then teamed with Carson Olson, Aidan Oxley and Riley Stevenson to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.90). The Silver Streaks won the league meeting, 149-30.
