Car set ablaze and a driver left with life threatening injuries after Saturday crash

Two cars collided and left a driver with life threatening injuries early Saturday morning, according to Kansas City police.

Officers were called at 3:20 a.m. on reports of a crash between vehicles in the area of U.S Highway 71 and Interstate 435, said Officer Donna Drake, a spokeswoman for the department.

Detectives discovered a GMC Envoy stopped for an unknown reason Saturday in the third lane of U.S Highway 71, heading south toward Interstate 435. The car did not have any lights on.

A Kia Stinger traveling south on that same highway at a high speed then slammed into the back of the stopped car. The Kia Stinger ricocheted off the GMC Envoy, running into the concrete median and catching fire.

The driver of the GMC Envoy was ejected from the car and hospitalized with life threatening injuries.

Both the passenger and driver of the car set ablaze were hospitalized with critical injuries.
