Cape Cod Baseball League roundup: Hyannis Harbor Hawks secure its fourth-straight win
The Hyannis Harbor Hawks notched a fourth straight win after they defeated the Falmouth Commodores (14-20-1) 5-2 at McKeon Park on Tuesday. The Harbor Hawks (21-13-1) used a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by an Eric Snow (South Florida) two-RBI single. They then added an insurance run in the next inning to push the game out of reach.
Snow finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Harbor Hawks. Kane Kepley (Liberty) had two hits and scored a run, while Carson Boles (Lincoln Memorial) had two hits and scored twice. Aaron Savary (Iowa) pitched four scoreless innings, gave up three hits, walked three and struck out six, before Michigan State’s Aaron Mishoulam pitched two innings, allowed four hits and a run and picked up the win. Dominick Carbone (Coastal Carolina) made the save.
Oregon State’s Gavin Turley (one RBI) and Texas Christian’s Karson Bowen both had three hits, and Isaiah Barkett (Stetson) tallied two hits and scored a run. Mac Heuer (Texas Tech) pitched three scoreless innings, allowed two hits, walked two and struck out three. Edward Hart (Duke) dropped to a 1-1 record after he allowed four runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings.
Y-D Red Sox 4, Orleans Firebirds 3
Oregon’s Carter Garate (one hit, one RBI) laid down a bunt to drive in the game-winning run as the Red Sox came back to beat the Firebirds. The Red Sox (22-10-4) led 2-0 before the Firebirds (12-22) posted three runs in the fifth inning to swing the game in their favor. But the hosts scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
UC Irvine’s Anthony Martinez (one walk, one hit, one run, two RBIs) hit a two-run home run with two outs in the first inning for the Red Sox who had six players record a hit. Ryan Sprock (Elon) had an RBI single in the ninth to tie the game. Starting pitcher Carson Ballard (Georgia Tech) tossed 4 1/3 innings, in which he gave up three hits, three runs (all earned), walked and struck out four. Northeastern’s Aiven Carbal (2/3 innings, no hits, no runs) improved to 5-1 after he picked up the win.
Chris Barr (United States Military Academy), Ian Daugherty (Oklahoma State) and Ben Zeigler-Namoa (Hawaii) recorded an RBI each for the Firebirds. Callan Fang (Harvard) had a tremendous outing on the mound. He gave up one hit (home run), two runs, walked one and struck out six in five innings. Georgetown’s Cody Bowker dropped to an 0-4 record after he gave up two hits, two runs (both earned), walked one and struck out four in three innings. Tucker Biven (Louisville) blew the save.
Harwich Mariners 7, Cotuit Kettleers 5
The surging Mariners (14-22) shocked the West Division leading Kettleers (21-12-1) for their fourth straight win. The Harwich pitching staff allowed just one run after it took a 6-4 lead following a three-run sixth inning. Five Mariners had two-hit games, which included Northeastern’s Cam Maldonado (solo home run, two runs, one RBI, one walk), Maryland’s Aden Hill (one run, one RBI, one walk) and Seton Hall’s Aiden Robbins (one run, one RBI). Justin Mitrovich (Elon) pitched four innings, gave up three runs (two earned), two hits, walked four and struck out two. Jake Hilton (Pomona Pitzer) pitched an inning, gave up a hit and a run, and moved to a 2-0 record with the win. Mass-Lowell’s Kevin Zarnoch earned the save after he pitched two innings.
UNC Wilmington’s Tanner Thach had three hits and scored two runs for the Kettleers in the loss. Brandon Compton (Arizona State) record two RBIs and drew two walks. Jarren Advincula (California) hit a solo home run and had two hits. Max Martzolf (Florida Atlantic) was the losing pitcher, while Cullen McKay (Virginia) blew the save.
Chatham Anglers 13, Brewster Whitecaps 2
The Anglers (17-18) jumped out to a six-run lead in the second inning and never looked back in a mercy-rule win over the Whitecaps (12-22-2). They locked up a playoff spot in the process. Dallas Baptist’s Chayton Krauss (five RBIs) hit a grand slam, Louisiana Lafayette’s Luke Yuhasz (three hits, three runs, four RBI) had a two-run homer, and Vanderbilt’s Jayden Davis had a solo home run. Auburn’s Ike Irish tallied three hits, three RBIs and scored twice. Robin Villenueve (Tennessee) had two hits and scored three times. Chatham racked up 13 hits in the victory. Tyler Murphy (Florida Atlantic) and Gabe Van Eamon (Connecticut) combined to give up five hits, two runs, three walks and four strike outs in seven innings. Van Eamon moved to 2-0 with the win.
California Baptist’s Nick Dumesnil hit a two-run homer in the loss. Darien Smith (Southeastern) pitched 3 1/3 inning, gave up seven hits, seven runs (all earned), walked one and struck out three and dropped to an 0-2 record. The Whitecaps have lost five-straight.
