Canelo vs Ryder LIVE result: Latest boxing fight updates

Canelo Alvarez was forced to settle for a points victory against a gutsy and bloodied John Ryder at a raucous Mexican homecoming.

Canelo, handed victory by the judges 120-107, 118-109 and 118-109 on the scorecards, retained his undisputed super-middleweight world championship in front of approximately 50,000 fans at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara.

But it was the Briton, covered in blood throughout the contest after suffering a suspected broken nose, who salvaged a morale victory after recovering from a heavy knockdown in the fifth round.

Ryder, who earned his shot at the champion with victories over Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker last year, could not grasp his second chance at a world title after a hard-fought defeat to Callum Smith in 2019, but emerges with great credit after 12 gruelling rounds.

While Canelo, despite building more momentum after victory last time out against Gennady Golovkin following defeat to light heavyweight Dmitry Bivol, continues to show signs that his best is behind him.

Bivol is likely to relish a probable rematch later this year with the Mexican’s output fading in the closing stages of tonight’s fight.

Frustrated Canelo Alvarez can take valuable homecoming lesson from gutsy John Ryder

06:14 , Jack Rathborn

A bloodied John Ryder rocked the canvas after being sent tumbling by Canelo Alvarez in the fifth round. A fast, crisp combination from the Mexican superstar appeared to satisfy a feverish crowd at his Guadalajara homecoming.

And then the Briton summoned immense courage, despite a brief, yet uncertain stare into the abyss. The echo of trainer Tony Sims’ advice and encouragement fixed Ryder’s concentration to beat the referee’s count before fending off the belligerent force of Canelo with a knockout in sight.

Plan A had been left in pieces with precious seconds between rounds frittered away after cotton buds momentarily stemmed the flow of blood from his nostrils to his mouth. But as Canelo licked his lips, eager to snatch a morale-boosting stoppage to gain valuable momentum for a rematch against Dmitry Bivol, Ryder grappled, closed the distance and left 50,000 fans frustrated across seven more gruelling rounds.

Will Canelo win Bivol rematch?

05:53 , Jack Rathborn

All smiles for Canelo, but will tonight bring fresh doubt about jumping back up to 175 pounds?

Bivol will relish the rematch, especially at 175 pounds, yet the Russian evidently wants the added reward and prestige of beating the Mexican a second time at a second weight class.

Eddie Hearn on Canelo Alvarez

05:37 , Jack Rathborn

Eddie Hearn: “It was very competitive in stages, John probably didn't believe enough in himself in the early stages, but he's tough. He's so well conditioned, which gets him through those moments. John had to get up and inside, I thought Canelo was spiteful, I'm not sure about his hands, something to look at.

“I thought he looked good, similar to the Callum Smith victory, dominated, but couldn’t get him out of there.

“I think he’ll be happy to get the rounds in the bank ahead of a tougher fight against Bivol. He wants a shot at the belts at 168 pounds, but Canelo only wants the rematch on the same terms. It’s Bivol giving Canelo the opportunity now, most people think he’s crazy and people will make him a big outsider against Bivol.

“He wants to step up. What other fight will you see Canelo as an underdog, we want to give this guy props. He doesn’t need to fight Bivol, he lost and it eats him up every day.

“Ryder has realised he’s a world class fighter. He’ll wake up and enjoy himself. He busted his nose, he won rounds later on, a fantastic effort, he didn’t look for a way out.”

Chris Mannix, DAZN’s official scorer for the fight, has it 106-102 to Canelo after 11 rounds.

Canelo vs Ryder: Briton survives again as Mexican drops the pace in Round 11

05:06 , Jack Rathborn

Can Canelo get another late knockout?

Ryder knows he’s close to a minor victory in itself now, two more rounds against the mighty Canelo, even if a points victory would likely require multiple knockdowns at this stage.

A lead uppercut from Ryder and then the clubbing left hook lands too. Canelo not using his left hook too much in the last few rounds after an early sighting in the contest.

Canelo drops the pace, is this now a real trend? Will challengers base a gameplan around a late flurry? These are all fascinating talking points after this fight.

Another round banked for Ryder. He’s reached the 12, magnificent.

Half-heartedly, Saul Alvarez raised his left arm, sweat sliding over the ink portrait of his daughter Emily. He chewed his tongue in anticipation. The eyes, though, rarely deceive. Their vacancy and wandering gaze betrayed the truth that “Canelo” knew: He was beaten.

It was not the first time, and there have been occasions in his long and increasingly illustrious career in which the Mexican has known the same truth but seen himself named a winner anyway. Still, hearing another man’s name echo around an arena at the end of 12 rounds – or any number – is a rarity for Canelo. And on this Cinco de Mayo weekend, 2022, there was to be no reprieve for the undisputed super-middleweight champion. Eyes glinting, Dmitry Bivol punched his right fist into the air, the victor “by unanimous decision, still undefeated, and still the WBA light-heavyweight champion of the world”.

For the first time since Canelo’s 2013 loss to Floyd Mayweather, the only other defeat of his professional career, the Mexican was tasked with rebuilding. That rebuild is still ongoing, and it continues tonight – 364 days since that loss to Bivol – when Canelo returns home to face John Ryder.

More from Steve Bunce:

“Back in 1993, I was in the majestic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for a similar homecoming fight. There was a record paid attendance of 132,247 on the day for Julio Cesar Chavez. It was a truly unforgettable night, an atmosphere of pure love and devotion and cheap beer.

“There was also an edge to the giant crowd that night; they had come for a Chavez win, and they had come for blood. Chavez obliged, stopping Greg Haugen in five rounds. Haugen was rescued by the referee, saved from any more of Chavez’s punches, but he was not spared from the anger and hate in the crowd.

“Ryder knows it will be serious this evening. And so does Canelo.”

It has become a painful cliche, the Rocky reference in a boxing narrative. In the case of John Ryder, it would also be a painful disservice, much as he acknowledges the underdog tag hanging around his neck this evening. Yet it is Ryder himself who makes the reference, and the specific parallels that he draws are admittedly apt.

Rocky IV would be my favourite,” the Londoner tells The Independent. “Ivan Drago, Russia, Christmas Day.” Tonight, it will be Canelo, Mexico, Cinco de Mayo weekend. “I suppose this is my Rocky moment, going to Mexico to get those titles.”

Ryder, for what it’s worth, is not a man to be awed by any opponent, environment or occasion. That will stand him in good stead in the humidity of Guadalajara, and the intensity of the Estadio Akron, where 50,000 Mexicans will scream for Canelo until their vocal cords tear. It will stand Ryder in good stead when the first bell sounds, and his bid to dethrone the undisputed super-middleweight champion begins – in the champion’s hometown, on one of Mexico’s most important days of the year.

“Ryder will pause with the referee and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for a second in the centre of the ring, before the bell sounds to delight 50,000 fanatics in the Estadio Akron. Ryder swears he is prepared for the noise and emotion and he has so far not flinched under Canelo’s ice-cold stare.

Canelo has been called the boxing king of Mexico, this fight is his long, long overdue homecoming after 12 years on the road, and here in Guadalajara, it feels like a coronation is about to close the city down.”

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fights John Ryder in Guadalajara tonight, defending the undisputed super-middleweight titles in a long-awaited homecoming.

The fight is Canelo’s first in Mexico since 2011, and his first outing since a points victory over Gennady Golovkin in September. Canelo, 32, retained his belts in that bout to round out a trilogy with Golovkin, and to bounce back from his first loss in nine years – a points defeat by light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

Meanwhile, Ryder enters Mexico as the WBO interim champion, having beaten Zach Parker last time out. Parker suffered a broken hand in the fourth round in November, as Ryder recorded a fourth straight win. Prior to that contest, the Briton’s biggest victory was a decision win against Daniel Jacobs last February. The 34-year-old is undoubtedly the underdog in tonight’s main event but is determined to prove the doubters wrong.

Meanwhile, Canelo is seeking an emphatic win not only to remain champion but also to stay on track for a rematch with Bivol.
