Candy corn? Reese's Peanut Butter Cups? Chocolate? Iowans have a new top Halloween candy

Starting Saturday, beggars and trick-or-treaters across central Iowa will stand on front porches for spooks, scares and of course, sweets.

This year, Americans are expected to spend a record amount on Halloween candy and that includes Iowans.

National spending on Halloween candy is expected to increase 16% to $3.6 billion, according to the National Retail Foundation.

What is the most popular Halloween candy in Iowa?

The results are in, and the rumors are true: Iowans aren't scared of chocolate and they're on trend, according to CandyStore.com's annual map of the leading Halloween candies.

  • No. 1: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups as Iowans purchase 67,426 pounds of the fan favorite

  • No. 2: M&M's with 62,579 pounds.

  • No. 3: Hershey's Mini Bars, which are rising through the ranks nationally, maintained third place in Iowa with 53,523 pounds sold.

The most popular candies nationally are Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and M&M's at No. 2 followed by Hot Tamales, Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, Starburst, Hershey's Kisses, candy corn, Hershey's Mini Bars and Snickers.

Iowan's crowned a new first place in 2023. Here's what the list looked like last year:

  • M&M's, which said Iowans bought 65,779 pounds for Halloween.

  • Reese's Peanut Butter Cups sat at No. 2 at 57,821 pounds.

  • Hershey's Mini Bars sold 51,729 pounds.
