Canada stabbing suspect found dead in Saskatchewan, second still on loose, ‘armed and dangerous’

One of two men involved in a stabbing spree that left 11 dead and 19 injured has been found dead in the indigenous community where the mayhem began, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said Monday.

Damien Sanderson, 31, had been found dead on the James Smith Cree Nation, Saskatchewan RCMP commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said Monday. His wounds “were not believed to be self-inflicted,” she told reporters, according to CJME Radio.

His brother, 30-year-old Myles Sanderson, was still at large and had been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of breaking and entering, CJME said.

Police suspected Myles Sanderson may be injured, too, though he was also considered armed and dangerous. He is still believed to be in the province’s capital city of Regina, which is where the police search had been focused since Sunday around lunchtime.

The new death toll in the rampage that began in the indigenous community and moved on to the 160-population village of Weldon, is 11, with 19 injured, up from 10 dead and 15 injured as reported on Sunday.

Residents recounted scenes of chaos and carnage as the two men, who the RCMP said were brothers, kicked in doors on the James Smith Cree Nation, stabbing anyone they found inside, and then moving on to another house, the National Post reported.

The alleged killers did not discriminate, knifing grandparents in front of their children, slaying children as they tried to protect their mothers.

“I lost a lot of family yesterday,” James Smith community member Michael Brett Jones wrote on Facebook. “Bodies everywhere on rez, some deceased and many others with severe knife wounds and bleeding. It was a war zone.”

He said his former partner, 49-year-old Lana Head, was one of them, according to the National Post.

“I witnessed many loved ones lying in peace as their lives were taken away from them,” another witness wrote.
