Canada Goose set to no longer use animal fur for its coats

Canada Goose is the latest apparel brand to end the use of fur in its clothing.

The winter-wear maker announced Thursday it will stop buying fur by the end of the year and stop manufacturing with fur in 2022.

Humane Society International praised the decision, calling it a “momentous step in the demise of our cruel fashion.”

For many years, Canada Goose has been the subject of widespread criticism from animal rights groups due to its utilization of animal fur, such as coyote fur, on a variety of its jackets and parkas.

“For years, Canada Goose’s trademark parka jackets with coyote fur trim have been synonymous with fur cruelty but their announcement today is another major blow to the global fur trade,” said Claire Bass, executive director of the Humane Society.

Canada Goose is following in the footsteps of numerous other fashion brands that have stopped using fur in their clothing in an effort to become more environmentally and ethically conscious, especially as younger customers have become more focused on sustainability.

The company has endeavored to use alternative materials to reduce its carbon footprint.

Bass said that fur was a “dying industry on its knees from the punches of so many top designers and retailers walking away from the PR-nightmare of fur.”

“Canada Goose’s fur-free policy will spare untold thousands of coyotes from being maimed and killed in cruel metal leg-hold traps,” she said.
