Whatever you may feel about New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton, there’s no denying that the man is a fierce competitor. So as he battles rookie Mac Jones for the starting job, he’s sharing his feelings on what the competition means to him.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Newton said that competing against your teammates is part of the “Patriot Way.” He said that the goal of the competition is to make everyone better – including the other quarterbacks.

“Ever since I’ve been here, there’s been a quarterback competition,” Newton said, via NESN. “I think in essence, that’s the underlying Patriot Way. Every position has a competition there, and the quarterback position is no different…Brian Hoyer is supposed to make me better. I’m supposed to make Mac Jones better. Mac Jones is supposed to make Brian Hoyer better. And you can’t forget about (Jake) Dolegala and even (Jarrett Stidham), that’s in the balance… But for us, it’s just the mentality to have that championship mental toughness each and every day, and the desire to get better.”

As for Newton’s impression of Mac Jones, he says that the rookie is “Cool like the other side of the pillow.” Newton said the man is so chill that he can never tell whether the man is upset or excited.

“You never know when he’s really down on himself. You don’t really necessarily know when he’s up, either. He’s real cool…” Newton said.

Fortunately, it doesn’t look like Cam Newton needs to worry about Mac Jones coming after his job – for now.

Newton was named the starter by head coach Bill Belichick this past week. Jones will be the backup for now.

Belichick can certainly change his mind midseason if the team isn’t playing up to standard.

But for now, it looks like Cam can focus on the games instead of warding off the competition.
