The first campaign reviews for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are out, and they are not good.

The latest entry in Activision's hugely popular FPS series is out this week, but critics are less than impressed with the single-player story mode.

On review aggregator website OpenCritic, Modern Warfare 3 has a 7% recommend rating and a critic average of just 54 at the time of writing, based on 19 reviews.

Reviews have described the campaign as forgettable with an underwhelming story. Many negatively commented on how the Verdansk map from Warzone was used for some of the missions.

Check out some of the reviews below:

Digital Spy - 3/5

"2023's sequel doesn't evolve the formula quite as much as we've seen before.

"[The] campaign feels like it might have been rushed in terms of new gameplay developments as well as narrative payoff."

Polygon - Unscored

"It has never been more of a hollow shooting gallery, a ghost of a game and a departure from everything that may have once made the franchise compelling to play."

IGN - 4/10

"New exciting locations are a rarity and pieces of Verdansk are recycled to diminishing effect. In total, it makes for a fairly forgettable set of missions this time around, even when it's trying its best to unsettle you with its story.

"It's a pale imitation of the past, made up of underbaked story moments that clash with attempts to introduce new open combat missions designed to encourage player freedom that instead fall flat on their face."

Eurogamer - Unscored

"At its best, with that vapid story combining with hit-and-miss stealth and borrowed widgets from Warzone, Modern Warfare 3's campaign is just a muddle."

GameSpot - 5/10

"Although its narrative setup is enjoyable, Modern Warfare 3 can't get out of its own way, with nearly half of the missions being the underwhelming Open Combat style. The bumpy pacing and abrupt ending make Makarov's big return a disappointment, dragging Modern Warfare 3 down as the weakest entry of an otherwise strong reboot series."

GamesRadar+ - Unscored

"The open, unscripted levels and plentiful reuse of Warzone areas, gear, and mechanics (right down to loadouts where you can change your gear) smacks of a game that had to be made fast and lean."

In addition to the single-player campaign, the game comes with multiplayer and a Zombies mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is out now on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
