California woman dragged by BART train after dog’s leash becomes stuck in door dies

A California woman was dragged to her death after her dog’s leash, tethered to her waist at the time, became stuck in the doors of a BART train as it rolled out of a station in downtown San Francisco.

Amy Adams was waiting for the train with her canine companion at the system’s Powell Street Station on Monday in the moments before tragedy struck, KPIX reported. Witnesses told authorities the 41-year-old briefly stepped onto a Dublin/Pleasanton-bound train around 3:15 p.m. and then hopped off just before it started to pull away from the station.

Her dog, however, remained inside as the doors quickly closed, and Adams was dragged as the train departed.

“There is a major delay at San Francisco stations due to person(s) on the track,” BART officials wrote in a tweet around 3:30 p.m.

Those on the train said Adams appeared to be waving to someone before she bolted from the train.

“This is a tragic loss of life, and we are following all safety protocols” said BART Spokesperson Alicia Trost.

Leashed or harnessed service dogs are permitted on BART trains, while all other animals, including non-service dogs, must travel in carriers.

Officials said there was no indication Adams’ pet was a service animal, but that it remained under investigation.

The dog was not injured in the incident.
