California man, 73, bitten by shark while snorkeling off Maui coast

A California man suffered injuries in an apparent encounter with a shark Friday morning while snorkeling off the coast of a Maui beach, marking the second such attack in Hawaii this year.

The Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety said the unnamed 73-year-old was sustained an apparent bite to his calf about 120 feet from shore, though he was able to make it back on his own, CNN reports.

The man was given first aid and, despite lacerations, is in good condition, according to officials.

The shark responsible is believed to have been about 8-feet long, according to a department press release.

Another shark attack occurred in Hawaii on Jan. 2, just weeks after an early morning attack on Dec. 8, which left a 56-year-old surfer dead, notes the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The man, attacked by a tiger shark estimated to be 14-feet long, was a local who suffered severe leg lacerations, according to the Hawaii Department of Aquatic Resources’ incident list.
