Butterball Recalls 78,000 Pounds of Raw Ground Turkey Products

In most cases, ground turkey is a lean and healthy choice. But Butterball is recalling approximately 78,164 pounds of raw ground turkey that may be contaminated with Salmonella Schwarzengrund, a rare strain of Salmonella.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Butterball turkey recall.

What ground turkey products should I look for?

It turns out that six separate raw ground turkey products were shipped to retailers and are now subject to this recall. Most were sold under the Butterball brand, but store-brand ground turkey at Kroger and Food Lion are also involved.

Below, you’ll find a list of the product names and what to look for on the labels. The recalled products were all produced on July 7, 2018 and marked with a “sell or freeze by” date of July 26, 2018.

The dates mean any Butterball turkey is likely hidden in the back of your freezer—so now’s a good time to clean it out and get organized.

This is what you need to know about Salmonella and how to avoid it.

What prompted the Butterball turkey recall?

It was the result of a Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) investigation into five cases of Salmonella Schwarzengrund. Four were in one household in Wisconsin, where Butterball-brand ground turkey samples were found.

The Butterball turkey recall is the latest in a line of Salmonella recalls—including the recent Gold Medal flour recall.

How can I avoid getting salmonella?

It’s important to wash your hands regularly while cooking, as well as your kitchen tools and surfaces, and anything that touches raw meat. In addition, make sure everything you serve reaches the correct temperature before you give it a nibble.
