This Butter Board Is the Latest Food Trend to Go Viral on TikTok

Over the years, charcuterie boards have become more and more creative. They've gone way beyond the simple cheese and meat spread and into a whole new realm of tasty snacks. In fact, there's a charcuterie board for just about any occasion—we're talking football-themed snack boards, Halloween boards, and even a hot chocolate board (for those with a sweet tooth). And the latest board craze has got the internet in a frenzy: butter boards! 🤯
You heard that right! This viral food trend started out like most food trends do these days—on social media. When food influencer Justine Doiron (@justine_snacks) posted about the butter board on TikTok, she garnered more than 8 million views! "Have you heard of a butter board?" Doiron says in the video, "This is what one looks like and I want to make them the next charcuterie board."
What is a butter board?
A butter board is exactly what it sounds like: butter on a board.
Okay, okay… so there's a little more to it than just that. But the concept is simple and despite some unconvinced commenters on TikTok, it's actually quite a delicious and fun way to serve up bread and butter. You can change the garnishes depending on the season and it's an easy appetizer just in time for the holidays!

And this new idea for butter boards will put those sticks (or pounds 😂) of butter to good use!
How do you make your own butter board?
While the first butter board concept to go viral was created by Doiron, she credits chef and cookbook author Joshua McFadden for the original idea. The recipe, which you can find on her website, starts off by spreading softened butter onto a cheese board, sprinkling it with flaky sea salt, and finishing it with all kinds of toppings (including lemon zest, herbs, honey, and edible flowers).
Of course, just like with other TikTok food trends, this is where you can get creative with the concept yourself. Use whatever toppings you like best—roasted garlic, chili crunch, sunflower seeds, fig jam, sun-dried tomatoes… the list goes on and on. Some people are even creating spin-offs on the butter board using cream cheese topped with fresh berries for a fun twist on a holiday brunch.
Just be sure to serve it up with some crusty bread for dipping and you’ll have a party starter that everyone will be talking about.
