Burr Oak softball wins twice at Sturgis on Saturday

STURGIS — The Sturgis softball team hosted a round robin with Burr Oak and Constantine visiting on Saturday.

Burr Oak finished the day with a pair of victories. Constantine finished 1-1 and Sturgis dropped both games.

The Bobcats beat Sturgis 14-1 in the final game. Burr Oak scored in each of the five innings. They connected for four hits in the contest, getting a single and a double from Braylynn Hernandez with one RBI while Amy Ledyard and Inez Ultz both had a base hit as well.

The Bobcats were pitched to the victory by Brooklynn Root with eight strikeouts.

Riley Northrop had three hits for the Trojans. Hannah Stielau, Gracie Pagels and Sophia Crites each had a base hit in the game as well.

Sturgis dropped a 21-0 game to Constantine in the opener on the day. The Falcons scored eight times in the first, three times in the second and 10 times in the third.

Olivia Ransbottom, Jozee Buglione and P Sharp each had two hits in the game for Constantine. The trio combined to knock in nine runs in the game. Kaitlyn Ross, Jocelyn Butler and Taryn Wolfinger each had a hit as well for Constantine, driving in a combined five.

Ross pitched the Falcons to the win, striking out five.

Mia Martinez had the lone hit for Sturgis.

Burr Oak edged Constantine 2-1 in nine innings in their matchup. The Bobcats scored the winning run in the home half of the ninth. Constantine had two hits in the game — a triple from Buglione and an RBI single from Olivia Herlein.

Ross struck out 13 batters inside the circle.

Burr Oak had two hits from Root plus one each from Hernandez, Elaine Holtom, Ledyard and Saryia Cornejo.

Root struck out 19 batters for Burr Oak to get the win.

Mendon plays to 2-1 mark

The Mendon softball team won two of three contests on Saturday at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.

The Lady Hornets dropped their first game of the year, 10-7, to Coopersville. Rowan Allen connected on a home run in this game, she finished with a single and a triple as well with three total RBIs. Jadyn Samson hit a single, double and triple with one RBI and Abby Butler clubbed two hits. Brielle Bailey knocked in two with a base hit, Kaidee Gonser also connected for a run-scoring hit. Ally Butler and Taya Bingaman each singled.

Mendon beat South Haven 9-5 in its first game, getting nine strikeouts from Allen. Gonser belted three hits in the game while Bailey, Cienna Nightingale and Gracie Schultz each had two hits. They combined for seven RBIs. Samson had an RBI hit while the Butlers each connected for a single.

Mendon also beat Williamston 10-5. Bailey smashed a grand slam in the game while Allen and Nightingale both had an RBI base hit. Samson collected two hits as well. Ally Butler picked up the win with five strikeouts.

Centreville finishes 1-2

The Centreville softball team won one of three games played on Saturday at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.

The Bulldogs beat Hartford 12-0 but fell to Gobles 15-1 and Portland 11-2.

Nikki Lennard pitched Centreville to the win over Hartford with three strikeouts in five innings. At the plate, Kendalynn Bernheisel hit two doubles and a single while Lennard had two hits and drove in three. Abbe Wherrett clubbed three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Hannah Lennard also had two hits with two RBIs, Mackenzie Douglas and Elise Richardson combined for three hits and three runs driven in.

Against Gobles and Portland, Hannah Lennard, August Blair and Richardson each grabbed a hit. Bernheisel logged three hits while Douglas and Laynie Cupp both had a hit, combining to drive in two.
