‘Bull Durham’ director Ron Shelton is coming to the Triangle. Here’s how to meet him.

The many catchphrases of “Bull Durham” are firmly inked into the memory of most Triangle locals — sports fans or not.

Now, residents can get an autograph to match.

On Sunday, “Bull Durham” director Ron Shelton will sign copies of “The Church of Baseball,” his behind-the-scenes reflections on the making of the 1988 smash.

He will be at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill at 12 noon. Flyleaf is selling the book for $30. Orders can be made at flyleafbooks.com/event/shelton-2022.

The film, part-sports movie and part-romantic comedy, follows Annie — a Durham Bulls groupie who steps out with one player every season — and her tangled love affairs with a rising-star pitcher and his catcher mentor.

The movie put the Durham Bulls baseball team on the map, as well as Shelton himself. The California native went on to write and direct titles like “White Men Can’t Jump,” “Blaze,” “Cobb” and “Tin Cup.”

Ron Shelton wrote and directed ‘Bull Durham,’ which was filmed in Durham, North Carolina, more than 30 years ago.

In “The Church of Baseball,” which was published earlier this month, Shelton dives into the naming of his characters, the making of iconic scenes at standout locales like Mitch’s Tavern, and all the nuts and bolts of pre-and post- production.

Shelton spent time as a minor league baseball player before taking on “Bull Durham,” The N&O previously reported. The book delivers a deep cut of the details he brought in from his experience, which even devoted fans of the movie may not catch.

Flyleaf, an independent book store, is located at 752 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The shop hosts author talkback and book signing events a few times a month.

Other recent visitors have included Alison B. Hart, author of “The Work Wife,” and Terry Roberts, author of “The Sky Club.”
