Building damage at DoubleTree Poughkeepsie hotel: Suspected cause, impact for guests

A piece of the façade of the DoubleTree Poughkeepsie, formerly known as the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel, fell to the ground Monday afternoon.

DoubleTree Poughkeepsie released a statement on its Facebook page Monday stating high winds caused the damage, no injuries occurred and the damage to the hotel was superficial.

Monday, the National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory and hazardous weather outlook for Poughkeepsie from approximately 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. Tuesday morning.

A portion of the north facade of the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel was ripped off the building during Monday’s high winds on March 11, 2024.

According to officials, the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department received the call at 2:18 p.m. and responded at the scene two minutes later.

The second time a piece of the façade has fallen

This is not the first time the façade of the DoubleTree Poughkeepsie has fallen off. In January 2019, a similar incident took place.

Water had leaked into a crack in the facing of the building, causing the piece to fall off amid strong winds.

No one was injured in either incident, and damages were superficial.

Is the hotel still open?

"The hotel remains fully operational and open for business," DoubleTree Poughkeepsie said in the statement.

They are working to restore the damaged section of the hotel with corporate engineers and contractors.

"At DoubleTree, we take the maintenance and upkeep of our properties seriously," the hotel said, "and we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and comfort for all those who visit us."
