Building and Construction Trades Council endorses Scott Stringer for NYC mayor
City Comptroller Scott Stringer scored a significant endorsement in the mayoral race.
The Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, which counts some 100,000 members, voiced its support of the candidate on Tuesday.
“Scott has been a trusted and principled friend of the union building trades for decades, tirelessly advocating for and empowering New York City’s tradesmen and tradeswomen,” the union’s President Gary LaBarbera said in a statement.
“At this crucial moment in our city’s history, we need a mayor with vision, grit, and unparalleled dedication to the power of the working men and women of New York City. Scott Stringer is that mayor,” he added.
Stringer officially kicked off his campaign with endorsements from prominent progressive lawmakers. But he recently lost a big one to Maya Wiley, who last week scored support from the powerful 1199 SEIU union of health care workers.
“If we want a real economic recovery that builds New York City back better than before, we will need to call upon the builders — the hard-working men and women of the Building Trades,” Stringer said in a statement. “And if we’re going to fight economic inequality in New York City, it begins by recognizing the workers who build it up. As mayor, I will fight for all working families to get a fair shake.”
Stringer is seen as a frontrunner in the race, but with just under four months to go before the June 22 Democratic primaries, no one candidate has broken away from the pack.
The first major poll in the race found entrepreneur Andrew Yang at the top, with support from 28% of voters. He was followed by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, with 17% and Stringer, with 13%.
