ORLANDO, FLA. — Kevin Stefanski's last public media appearance came a month ago at the NFL combine.

Since that time, the Browns continued to add to their organization, both on the roster and in the coaching/front office ranks. They added more than a dozen free agents, many of whom were their own.

On top of that, the Browns added former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel to the organization. Vrabel, the Akron native and former Walsh Jesuit High School and Ohio State University star, was hired as a coaching and personnel consultant.

Those were among the topics Stefanski faced as he sat down with primarily a small group of beat writers Monday morning at the NFL owners meetings at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes in Orlando, Fla. Here's a look at some of the highlights of that conversation.

Kevin Stefanski 'reshaping the quarterback room' wasn't necessarily the goal

The Browns' quarterback room will look much different next season, with only starter Deshaun Watson and second-year pro Dorian Thompson-Robinson coming back from a year ago. They went out in free agency and signed former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston and former Baltimore Ravens backup Tyler Huntley to add to the room.

"I don't know that [reshaping] the room was the goal," Stefanski said. "I think it was just always every year looking at what is the best way to put that room together. We're excited about Jameis. I think Jameis is a really, really talented young player, just getting to know him over the course of the last couple of weeks. He's a great teammate. He's excited about helping the team. Obviously able to bring in Tyler Huntley, another young player that we've competed against. So I think it's just a matter of adding some good young to the room."

Stefanski would not commit to any sort of depth chart in the room. That was specifically in reference to a question about Huntley and Thompson-Robinson.

Deshaun Watson 'right where he needs to be' in rehab

Watson started throwing last week in Los Angeles as part of his recovery from the shoulder surgery he underwent in November. The surgery on his throwing shoulder both repaired a broken glenoid as well as fixed other structural damage.

Stefanski and offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey visited with Watson earlier in March. That was prior to him starting to throw, but Browns trainer Joe Sheehan has also been involved in the process since it began.

"He's right where he needs to be," Stefanski said. "He has started throwing. Joe Sheehan, our trainer, went out and supervised some of his throwing. So we'll see him in April when he gets back in and we'll just continue that rehab."

Stefanski remained non-committal about a timeline, preferring to wait until Watson returns to Cleveland for the offseason program.

Mike Vrabel 'a resource' for Kevin Stefanski in new role with Cleveland Browns

The hiring of Vrabel into a consultant role was something that seemed to come out of the blue when it became known two weeks ago. Stefanski didn't want to dive into details on what kind of duties Vrabel would perform, be it on game day or any other day.

However, Stefanski made it known that Vrabel will be a "resource" for him.

"I'll let Vrabes kind speak for his perspective," Stefanski said. "From my perspective, we're very excited to get Vrabes up there. I can tell you, just having him and throwing a Browns sweatshirt on him was a big deal for me. Get the kid back up into Northeast Ohio. … When he didn't have a head coaching job this last cycle, I made sure that he knew that we would love to get him up there in some capacity.

"So that was really the beginning of that conversation. We had him up there last week, did a great job. He's a resource. He's a resource for me. He's a resource for (general manager) Andrew (Berry), and I'm very, very excited to have him."

'Fit' was big in decision to sign Jameis Winston over Joe Flacco

Joe Flacco captured the hearts of Browns fans during his December to remember last season. However, the quarterback was not re-signed by the team in free agency, as it elected to sign Winston.

Stefanski was asked about that move on Monday.

"Well, I would just say with Joe, No. 1, and we've talked about it last year [it] was great getting to know him, getting him implemented into our team, what he meant, the impact he had, was special," Stefanski said. "I think every year you have to look at your roster, look at the team and make decisions that you think are right for the football team.

"We're really excited about Jameis. He's a talented, talented football player. I'm excited about his fit with what we're doing, but that was really the crux of it."

Quick highlights on Dawand Jones, Nick Chubb and others

  • On Dawand Jones playing left tackle: "We’ll see when it comes to those things. I don’t know that we’re there yet. But I think along the offensive line, versatility’s important."

  • On Dawand Jones, Jack Conklin and Jedrick Wills Jr. recoveries: "It's hard because they're all rehabbing different injuries and are at different timelines. I know they're all doing a great job in their rehab, but when they're all coming off and ready to go, I don't have that update."

  • On Nick Chubb's recovery: "I'm excited for Nick. He's doing a great job with his rehab, as everybody can imagine. We'll just make sure that we continue to make decisions based on him and the medical staff. But excited about Nick."

  • On Jerry Jeudy: "We’re excited about adding Jerry to that room. He’s another talented player. He can win in a variety of ways. We just think if you add good players to the complement you have already, it makes life easier on the other guys as well. Jerry’s a guy that we’ve spent a lot of time on both as he was coming out over the past few years. Really like his skill set, like his ability to separate, like his ability to make plays with the football."

  • On potential of opening season in Brazil: "Well, I just got off the phone with Mo (Hurst) and he's on top of it, so he'll let us know. Yeah, he'll let us know if we’re playing there. Yeah, we'll see. As you know, it's us and Green Bay apparently. We don't know. They don't know, but we'll play anywhere, wherever they tell us. We don't set the schedule. We don't really care."

  • On play-calling duties: "As it relates to calling plays, that's not something I'm not ready (to reveal)."
