Brown Local student injured in school bus crash in Carroll County

A Brown Local student was treated at a Canton hospital after a school bus hit a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon on Canton Road NW just north of Bellflower Road NW in Carroll County's Brown Township.

The crash occurred at 3:25 p.m. when the southbound bus struck the back of the 2019 Ford F-150, which was also southbound.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Hawkins said bus driver Constance J. Didio-Guist, 62, of Malvern, was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead. She was not injured.

The driver of the pickup, a 30-year-old Canton man, was treated for minor injuries at Aultman Hospital in Canton.

Brown Local Superintendent Mark Scott said the student who had minor injuries was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital in Canton but did not stay overnight.

"Nine students were on board at the time of the accident," Scott said in a prepared statement. "Emergency services were on-site, and all students and adults were evaluated."

Hawkins said the driver told troopers that the collision happened after she looked into the rear-view mirror to check on the passengers, ages 6 to 11. When she looked back at the road, the vehicle ahead of her was stopped.

Scott said the district immediately contacted the students' families.

"We successfully implemented our reunification plans with eight students released to their guardians on-site and one student transported by EMS with their parent to a local hospital," Scott said. "We will follow up with families to ensure everyone gets the necessary care and support they need."

The New Philadelphia patrol post is investigating the accident.
