Broward students will have a long weekend as the school district announced it will extend its closure to Thursday ahead of Hurricane Nicole’s approach.

The Thursday closure means all Broward County Public Schools events, field trips, school-related activities, classes, committee meetings, and before- and after-school care will be canceled.

The Archdiocese of Miami’s Broward elementary and secondary schools will also be closed on Thursday.

“To ensure our schools are safe for our students and staff, schools will be closed Thursday, Nov. 10,” Broward Schools Superintendent Vickie Cartwright said in a public safety video.

Charter Schools USA, which has eight schools in Broward, also announced it will be closed on Thursday.

The extension of the Broward Public Schools closure means more than 200,000 students in the nation’s sixth-largest school district won’t be back in the classroom until Monday. The district’s schools were already scheduled to be closed on Friday in observance of Veterans Day.
