Broward deputy fatally hits man while responding to call about improper sexual activity: BSO

A Broward deputy responding to a call about inappropriate sexual activity in Pompano Beach struck and killed a man who was “related” to it Saturday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

At around 5:30 a.m., investigators arrived to the scene of a crash in the 1500 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard, according to BSO. They quickly uncovered that deputy Wyatt Jennesse struck 28-year-old Jamil Moreland.

Jennesse, 24, was responding to a call about lewd and lascivious activity near North Powerline Road. Moreland, the sheriff’s office says, was on the street “laying or in a crouched position” when the deputy ran over him on the left lane.

“The deputy came to a controlled stop and reported the crash,” the statement says. “Emergency personnel pronounced Moreland deceased.”

Detectives later confirmed that Moreland was somehow “related” to the call to which Jennesse was responding, according to BSO. Though it’s unclear how Moreland was associated with the report.

Driver impairment, speeding and mechanical issues aren’t considered “contributing factors” in the crash. Detectives will continue the probe.
