Bronson softball splits doubleheader, wraps up Big 8 conference crown with win

SPRINGPORT - The Bronson Vikings took the long trip to Springport on Tuesday for their final Big 8 softball doubleheader of the season with grandiose things at stake. With a win Tuesday against the Spartans the Vikings would solidify yet another Big 8 conference crown, as Bronson entered the night unbeaten in the conference at 10-0.

Springport played the role of spoiler in game one however Bronson battled back and took game two handily, securing an outright Big 8 conference crown for the third straight season.

Before the Vikings could celebrate their conference crown however, it was Springport playing the spoiler as the Spartans took game one of the scheduled double header 11-7 in extra innings.

Ashlynn Harris took the loss on the mound for Bronson in game one after pitching eight innings, allowing 10 hits and 11 runs, eight earned, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Delanee Carpenter notched the only multi-hit game for Bronson in game one, finishing 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI.

Harris, Brealyn Lasky, Kailynne Scare and Mya Webb all notched hits, while Harris and Webb added doubles. Harris had an RBI while Scare added two.

Bronson looked to bounce back in game two and claim the conference title and they did just that, rolling past Springport for the championship clinching 6-0 victory.

Webb pitched an absolute gem on the mound for Bronson, throwing all seven innings while allowing only three hits with no runs. Webb walked four and struck out one in the victory.

Ciara Blankenship, Lydia Wells, Roni Bir, Lasky, Scare, and Webb all recorded hits, with Webb adding two RBIs and Scare stealing a base.

“We really struggled the first game in all aspects,” Bronson coach Becky Gray said. “I was really proud of the way we came back and found a way to win. It is nice to get a league title.”

With the win the Vikings improve to 17-9 overall on the season and finish Big 8 play with an impressive record of 11-1. Bronson will be back in action after spending a day celebrating their conference trophy on Thursday when they host Hanover Horton.
