British Open betting: An improbable Tiger Woods win would net a bettor $180,000
Tiger Woods continues to entice bettors.
Woods is a long shot ahead of next week’s British Open at St. Andrews. After withdrawing from the PGA Championship after three rounds, Woods skipped the U.S. Open to get ready for the British Open and play again at a course where he’s won two Opens.
But Woods’ +4000 odds didn’t stop one bettor at BetMGM from placing a $4,500 bet on the legendary golfer. If Woods somehow wins next weekend, his 16th major tournament win would be one of the biggest comebacks in golf history. And it would net that bettor $180,000.
There’s plenty of reasons to believe that 16th victory won’t happen this year, however. Woods withdrew from the PGA as he’s still working back from the severe leg injuries he suffered in his February 2021 car crash. And his game hasn’t been in fine form as a result. Woods started the Masters strong but faded as the tournament went on and was never in contention at the PGA.
It’s fair to believe that any other golfer in Woods’ situation would have far longer odds than he currently does. But since he’s Tiger Woods, he has the same odds to win the tournament as Joaquin Niemann and Tommy Fleetwood and better odds than Daniel Berger, Tony Finau and Sergio Garcia among many others.
Rory McIlroy is the favorite
Woods is getting the third-most money to win the Open so far at BetMGM thanks to some help from that bet. Woods has gotten 6.2% of bets and those bets make up just under 10% of the handle.
Just three more golfers are getting more bets than Woods is. Rory McIlroy is the favorite at +1000 and is getting the most bets (8.2%) and the most money (14.8%). Will Zalatoris at +2200 is getting 7% of bets and 6% of the money while Masters champion Scottie Scheffler (+1200) is getting 6.3% of bets and 10.7% of the money.
