Bring out the clear bags: This iconic Kansas City venue is changing its rules for shows

A few more changes are coming to Starlight Theatre in 2024.

Ahead of the construction of a giant canopy that will cover the theater’s front 3,200 seats, set to begin in the fall, the Kansas City amphitheater announced new policies for this concert season.

A representative with the venue said they’ll have an update soon on the construction, but before you head to Starlight and watch one of many concerts and performances coming to Kansas City this year, here are some other changes you should know about.

Clear bag policy

New to Starlight Theatre is a clear bag policy. It’s similar to the policy enforced by the Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Visitors can only bring in:

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches

  • One-gallon clear zip-seal bag (Ziploc bag or similar)

  • Small clutch bags that do not exceed 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches

Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection, Starlight said.

Changes to parking

There is a bit more color around the Starlight Theatre parking lots for 2024. The venue worked with the Kansas City Zoo to create shared parking signage.

Instead of animal names, the lots are now named by color:

  • Zebra Lot is now Yellow Lot

  • Cheetah Lot is now Red Lot

  • Lot A is now Blue Lot

There are also the orange and green parking lots in the area.

General parking is still free at Starlight, and you can pay $30 for premium parking.

A new app to keep track of weather alerts

Since some events at Starlight Theatre can get delayed due to the weather, the venue is now using an app to keep visitors updated.

Starlight uses Statusfy to keep their audience aware of delays due to weather, traffic or other issues. You can download the app on your mobile device or check the website to receive updates.

Digital tickets

Everyone who buys tickets to a Starlight show will have access to a mobile ticket wallet, which you can share with others and add to your Apple wallet.

You can access your tickets on wallet.kcstarlight.com from any device and enter your email address. You will need to make an account and register your email if you haven’t used the website before.

Your tickets will be visible when you log in. If you’re holding all the tickets for your group, you can share them individually by entering the first and last name of the person you are sharing with and selecting the ticket you are sharing. Then, click or tap on the “Share with Guest” button and select the recipient from your contacts.

The QR codes regenerate every 30 seconds, so do not print a screenshot or save the image to your phone. Those codes will not scan at entry.

Food and drink options

Starlight said it’s also made several improvement to the dining experiences at the theater.

The Applause Club, Starlight’s dining experience, opens at 6:30 p.m. and is first come, first served on Broadway show nights. When a concert is happening, the club is reserved for season ticket holders and sponsors.

The venue is also adding the Starlight Express Market, a grab-and-go food and drink section. Guests will swipe their credit or debit cards first to enter this area, grab what they want, and then the cost is charged to their card.
