Bridgerton star says she was "so ready" for Penelope's makeover

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has revealed she was "so ready" to see her character Penelope Featherington's glow up in season 3.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the upcoming season, which is set to begin airing on Netflix from May 16, 2024, the actor shared her thoughts on the makeover her character received as her storyline with love interest Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) takes centre stage.

"I was so ready for the glow up, and it was just so much fun to get to do it," Coughlan said, when asked whether or not she'd miss Penelope's signature citrus yellow colour palette.

"I wouldn't necessarily say that all redheads can't wear citrus because I don't think that's true. I think it's a combination," she continued.

"It's both that it's neon yellow, it's covered in flowers, I'm wearing a necklace with like 20 butterflies on it, I have a tiara and they have the tightest curls you've ever seen."

Season 3 of Bridgerton will follow the events of the fourth novel, Romancing Mr Bridgerton, in Julia Quinn's series, which sees Penelope decide it's time for her to take a husband.

Penelope's decision to get married coincides with the return of Colin from his summer travels, with the latter promising to aid in her quest for love.

However, Colin and Penelope's plan will inevitably lead them closer together, with Colin seen questioning whether the "foundation for love is friendship" in the show's latest trailer.

Coughlan previously shared her fears about stepping into the main role in season 3, revealing to Harper’s Bazaar that she found the departure from playing a supporting character "terrifying."

"A huge theme in this series of Bridgerton is the idea that Penelope is stepping out of the shadows and into the light," she said.

"But not only was this a journey that Pen had to embark on, it’s also one I had to go on myself. I was presented with these brilliant opportunities but was racked with doubt as to whether I could take on the challenge."

Bridgerton seasons 1-2 are streaming now on Netflix, along with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Season 3 premieres in two parts, on May 16 and June 13.
