Brick, Island Beach State Park, North Wildwood join Jersey Shore towns banning beach tents

North Wildwood and Brick have just joined the many other Jersey Shore municipalities in setting up restrictions for beach sunshade structures such as umbrellas and tents of any kind.

North Wildwood banned tents and umbrellas wider than 8 feet, while Brick now doesn't allow tents.

The move comes as Jersey Shore communities struggle to counter the effects of beach erosion.

With less beach space, fewer people can go to the beach, unless space is economized by restricting structures that take up space.

"The size of our real estate has been shrinking and we want to make sure that we get the most bang for our buck for all the people who would like to come to the beach," Brick Mayor Lisa Crate told WNBC Channel 4 in New York.

Also joining the list is Island Beach State Park, which now has a ban on tents in all swimming areas starting on Memorial Day weekend.

Currently there are more beaches with restrictions on umbrellas and tents than there are beaches without a ban on those items.
