Brian Gosset: Biggest things from Week 7 of the Fort Worth-area high school football season

Week 7 has already come and gone as Fort Worth-area teams continue their march this season. A lot of action took place with impressive wins and big upsets, plus top recruits proving why they’re some of the best in the state.

Check out the best of the best from the seventh week of the Texas high school football season.

Best win

Burleson Centennial 23, Denton Ryan 16

Perennial powerhouse Denton Ryan, which went to back-to-back state championship games and got a win in the 2020 Class 5A Division 1 final, came into Friday night without a loss in district since 2014.

Ryan had a 42-game winning streak going, but Burleson Centennial had different plans.

The Spartans were led by Elijah Zeh’s 128 yards rushing and two touchdowns as they snapped Ryan’s streak. Centennial (6-0) continues to have its best start in program history.

The Raiders led 16-14 with 9:23 to play in the third quarter, but the Spartans got a 10-yard run from Phillip Hamilton to go up 20-16 and they added a field goal to pull off the upset.

Biggest Upset

Lake Worth 10, Kennedale 3

Another long district win streak went down Friday night when the Bullfrogs beat the Wildcats for the first time since 1999. Kennedale was riding a 61-game district win streak, which dated back to 2011, according to Max Preps.

The win keeps Lake Worth (5-1, 3-0) in a tie for first place in district with Dunbar.

The two teams hadn’t played the past two years, but in their last meeting, Kennedale won 48-0 in 2019.

Lake Worth turned a first quarter fumble recovery into a touchdown, which proved to be more than enough. Damian Moore’s lone pass attempt was complete to Charles Lawrence-Williams from eight yards out to put the Bullfrogs up 7-0 midway through the first.

1,276 and 105

In an offensive shootout, Arlington beat Bowie 57-48, combining for 105 points and 1,276 yards on offense in a District 8-6A showdown. Both team’s passing attack led the way as Arlington (4-2, 2-0) got 423 yards in the air from Sam Semi and Bowie (4-3, 2-1) got 459 yards from DeAngelo Ponder.

Arlington started the game with a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Volunteers chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter, scoring 27 points to trail only 34-27 at the half.

The Colts extended the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Bowie 17-7 thanks to a touchdown run from Drelon Burton for 25 yards and a touchdown pass from Semi to Isaiah Robertson for 52 yards. Burton finished the game with 29 carries for 170 yards and five touchdowns for the Colts.

345 yards passing

Kaden Brown, Sr., QB, Midlothian Heritage

Brown, who’s a South Dakota State commit, shined with 345 yards and five touchdowns in the Jaguars 44-20 win over Mansfield Summit. The game was live streamed on WFAA platforms.

Heritage is 5-1 and 3-0 while Summit falls to 3-3 and 2-1.

Xavier Moten was Brown’s top target, getting four touchdowns on five catches and putting up 126 yards. Heritage broke open the game after outscoring Summit 37-13 in the second and third quarters thanks in large part to four takeaways. Heritage capitalized on three of those four takeaways for scores.

235 yards rushing

Owen Allen, Sr., RB, Southlake Carroll

Allen, the preseason all-area offensive MVP and top ranked running back was doing Owen Allen things in the Dragons 38-35 win over upset minded Keller Indians.

Allen rushed for a season-high 235 yards and three touchdowns to lead Carroll to a 6-0 record.

He goes over 800 yards rushing on the season with 14 touchdowns. He had his fourth game of 100 or more yards on the ground and upped his career totals to 97 TD runs and 99 overall TDs.

Allen will look to hit 100 career scores next Thursday against Keller Central.

252 yards receiving

Jacob Trimble, Sr., WR, Fort Worth Christian

The 3-star Montana State commit had a huge game for the Cardinals, but the team came up short 44-34 against Argyle Liberty Christian in a battle of the top two teams in the Fort Worth-area rankings.

Not only did Trimble have 252 yards receiving, but he did with 15 catches and four touchdowns.

Trimble averaged nearly 17 yards per catch and had a long of 54. Despite FWC getting its first loss, Trimble matched his season total in TD catches. He had none in each of the past two games.

He has 42 catches on the season for 570 yards and eight TDs.

Undefeated

These teams are still unbeaten after seven weeks: Carroll, Lake Country, Arlington Heights, Mansfield, North Crowley, Byron, Argyle, Timberview, Midlothian, Burleson Centennial, Richland, Tolar, Temple Christian
