Brian Gosset: Biggest things from Week 10 of the Fort Worth-area high school football season
Week 10 has already come and gone as Fort Worth-area teams continue their march this season. A lot of action took place with impressive wins and big upsets, plus top recruits proving why they’re some of the best in the state.
Check out the best of the best from the 10th week of the Texas high school football season.
Best win
Dunbar 14, Lake Worth 10
The Wildcats scored early in the fourth quarter and then hung on to knock off the Bullfrogs on Friday. The win pulled Dunbar into a three-way tie for first place in the district standings with one game to go.
Dunbar can play for a district title next week against Kennedale.
Dunbar is playoff bound for the second straight season and 10th time in the last 12 years. The Wildcats improved their record to 5-1 in district and 5-4 overall.
Lake Worth came into the game No. 4 in the area rankings. The Bullfrogs were averaging 38 points per game and had put up 66 points in the previous week.
Biggest Upset
Alvarado 50, Stephenville 49
In one of the biggest upsets this season, Alvarado rallied back to defeat defending Class 4A D1 champ Stephenville 50-49 in Dublin.
The win snapped a four-game skid for the Indians and pulled Alvarado into third place in the district standings.
Stephenville came in ranked No. 2 in the 4A D1 state rankings.
Alvarado trailed 35-14 at halftime before outscoring the Yellowjackets 22-0 in the fourth quarter.
The Indians were 35-point underdogs.
Cassius Johnson scored on a 5-yard touchdown run late in the game and the Indians went for the game-winning two-point conversion. Cardea Collier hit Kaden Ford to put Alvarado on top by one.
Then Collier intercepted a pass to seal the win.

Top recruit
Landen Chambers, Sr., RB, Fossil Ridge
The 3-star BYU commit rushed for 231 yards and three touchdowns in the Panthers 35-7 win over Keller Central. He’s nearing 1,500 yards rushing this season.
Ridge improved to 3-3 in 4-6A and 5-4 overall.
Chambers is rated in the Top 150 for all senior backs in the country, according to 247Sports.
He committed to BYU over the summer.
287 yards passing
Tre Guerra, Sr., QB, Keller
Guerra, a Central Arkansas commit, was on fire during the final three quarters during the Indians win over Timber Creek, throwing for 287 yards and four touchdowns.
He connected twice with a pair of receivers, Amarion Henry and Tre’ Griffiths.
The win helped Keller to a playoff berth.
Guerra’s game moved him to over 1,700 yards passing and 17 TDs on the season.
294 yards rushing
Landon Thigpen, Jr., RB, Godley
Thigpen rushed 42 times for 294 yards and four touchdowns in the Wildcats 32-16 win over Hillsboro. Godley improved to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in district.
On the season, Thigpen has rushed for nearly 1,900 yards and 17 TDs.
He’s rushed for 200 or more yards in back-to-back weeks and five total. His season high is 311 yards against Ferris.
Top receiver
Kelby Valsin, Sr., WR, Arlington Bowie
The 3-star Texas Tech commit caught five passes for 98 yards and three touchdowns in the Volunteers 56-13 win over Lamar. Vols improved to 3-2 in district and 5-4 overall.
Valsin is nearing 1,000 yards receiving this season.
Valsin is rated in the Top 200 for all senior WRs in the country, according to 247Sports.
He committed to Tech over the summer.
