The Brewers will decide on Tuesday whether Christian Yelich goes on the IL with a back injury.

Christian Yelich was out of the lineup for the third consecutive game Monday night as the Milwaukee Brewers opened a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at American Family Field.

"Yeli is about the same," manager Pat Murphy said of the soreness in Yelich's lower back. "We just don't feel like making a decision yet on the IL is prudent. We feel like we can wait until the last minute to do it and see if he feels much better in one day.

"He's on some medication and hopefully that helps calm it down a little bit so he's able to play. Obviously, he's been an impactful offensive player, to say the least."

Indeed, Yelich is off to a red-hot start, hitting .333 with five home runs, 11 runs batted in and an OPS of 1.166.

Murphy said Tuesday will be the day a decision needs to be made, with the Brewers able to backdate a 15-day stint on the injured list a maximum of three days.

Milwaukee did recall Joey Wiemer from Class AAA Nashville, so it has additional depth in the outfield. Sal Frelick has started two of the three games Yelich has missed in left field.

JB Bukauskas dealing with a triceps injury

Murphy also offered an update on right-hander JB Bukauskas, who was injured while pitching Saturday in Baltimore.

"We got some decent news back," Murphy said. "It wasn't in his lat; it was more in his triceps. But there's still more investigation to do on how severe it is.

"The initial reading was it wasn't as serious as it could be."

The Brewers brought left-hander Jared Koenig up from Nashville on Sunday to take Bukauskas's spot in the bullpen.
