Brendan Fraser has found his next movie project.

After winning the Best Actor Oscar earlier this year for playing Charlie in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale, it's been reported that he'll team up with Beef director Hikari for Rental Family (via Deadline).

Rental Family centres on a "down-and-out actor living in Tokyo, hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental-family company".

This takes him on a journey of self-discovery through the roles he inhabits in other people's lives.

In development since 2019, and co-written by Stephan Blahut, the feature is scheduled to shoot in Japan in the springtime.

It marks Fraser's first lead movie role since The Whale, having only appeared in a couple of scenes throughout Martin Scorsese's true-crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon, which was released this autumn.

In their reviews, though, a handful of critics weren't too keen on Fraser's portrayal of the lawyer W. S. Hamilton.

Scorsese himself brushed this aside during a press conference for the movie this month, explaining (via LADBible): "We thought he'd be great for the lawyer and I admired his work over the years. He actually came in for, I think, a couple of weeks on the picture, particularly when it was in our later shoot."

Recalling a standout Fraser moment on set, the filmmaker added: "We had a really good time working together, particularly with Leo. Particularly in the scene where he says, 'They're putting a noose around your neck, he's saving you dumb boy'.

"Really for us, when we heard that… he brought the whole scene down on Leo. It was perfect. He's a wonderful actor and he was just great to work with."
