Brendan Fraser has looked back on one of The Mummy Returns' characters, defending the hilarious CGI.

It was 2001 and the star returned in the role of Rick O'Connell for the follow-up to The Mummy. In the second half of the sequel, Dwayne Johnson's villainous Scorpion King–a half human, half scorpion hybrid–is finally unveiled as he attacks Rick inside a pyramid. Unfortunately, the underwhelming scene felt out of place within the context of the movie due to some interesting, very noticeable visual effects.

In an interview with GQ about his most iconic characters, Fraser admitted the CGI was just not great, revealing even the VFX artists of the movie knew it wasn't exactly one for their best.

"The guys who did the CGI of the Scorpion King, [I saw them] at the premiere and they were like: 'Hey, how are you? We did the Scorpion King CGI. Yeah we needed a little more time. It was very last minute,'" Fraser explained.

The actor, however, didn't mind and still thinks that scene ended up being a work of art in its own right.

"Some of the charm of it now is… it could get remastered I guess, but it wouldn't be as fun if you didn't see this janky video game character of Dwayne," he added.

"It's somehow just perfect how it works."

Though the possibility of a new film in The Mummy franchise seems to have been put on the back burner, we're currently in a Brendan Fraser renaissance, which may just help speed things up.

The actor is a top contender at the next Oscars for his role in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale and will next be seen in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone and Jesse Plemons.
