Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has announced plans to take a break from acting.

Regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation – mostly thanks to those phenomenal five years portraying Walter White on Breaking Bad – Cranston recently told GQ Magazine that he's heading off into the sunset with his wife Robin Dearden in 2026, when he turns 70 years old.

"I want to change the paradigm once again," he said. "For the last 24 years, Robin has led her life holding onto my tail. She's been the plus one, she's been the wife of a celebrity.

"She's had to pivot and adjust her life based on mine. She has tremendous benefit from it, but we're uneven. I want to level that out. She deserves it."

According to the GQ profile, Cranston also plans to shut down his production company Moonshot Entertainment and sell his half of tequila brand Dos Hombres, before relocating to a small village – probably in France – for at least six months.

"I want to go for day trips and have the fire in the fireplace and drink wine with new friends and not read scripts," he explained.

"It's not going to be like, 'Oh, I'll read and see what I'm going to do.' No, it's a pause. It's a stop. I won't be thinking about [work]. I'm not going to be taking phonecalls."

"It's about taking a chance. I'm used to that feeling – of not knowing."

The award-winning star stopped by Cannes Film Festival last month to promote his next movie Asteroid City, directed by the one and only Wes Anderson.

In it, Cranston plays the host of an anthology television show opposite an all-star cast list including Tom Hanks, Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Maya Hawke, Hong Chau, Margot Robbie, Edward Norton and Steve Carell, to name only a few in the movie's huge ensemble.

Asteroid City hits cinemas on June 23.
