Braves swimming wins Pacer Invitational

Nov. 20—CARY — The UNC Pembroke swimming team claimed top honors in 14 events and logged seven NCAA B Standard times on the way to winning the Pacer Invitational over the weekend.

The Braves held the top three spots in the 500-yard Freestyle event with Britta Schwengle winning the event with a NCAA B Standard time. Fatima Portilo also registered an NCAA B Standard time in second place, while Chiara Ambrosi placed third in the event.

Mariel Mencia Martinez bested the field in the 50-yard Freestyle for an NCAA B Standard time, while Benedetta Pepe Pugliese hit an NCAA mark in the 400-yard Individual Medley on the way to a first place finish.

Portilo stood at the top of the podium in the 200-yard Butterfly with her second NCAA mark, while Pepe Pugliese and Rodriguez Matos placed first and second, respectively, in the 200-yard Breaststroke while hitting NCAA marks in the event.

The Braves will be back in action on Dec. 9 when they travel to Hickory for the Lenior-Rhyne Tri-Meet at the Shuford Pool. UNCP will compete against Lenior-Rhyne and Milligan in the meet.
